TOUR THE HISTORIC HERALD EXAMINER BUILDING

TOUR THE HISTORIC HERALD EXAMINER BUILDING
designed by famed architect Julia Morgan

In 1904, Morgan was the first woman to obtain an architecture license in California. Greatly impressed by her work on the reconstruction of the Fairmont Hotel, after the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, Phoebe Hearst recommended Morgan for several large construction projects, including Asilomar. Her son, William Randolph Hearst, was likewise greatly impressed and, after his mother’s death, retained Morgan to design what would become the biggest and most famous project of her career, Hearst Castle.
